This was my first ever mural, created for Friend's of Kensington's yearly "A Future Without Oppression" event. Within a half day, I painted a self-portrait on the ground of Toronto's famous Kensington Market. This portrait depicts an experience I wished for at this time (and continue to): a safe ride on the subway as a Black woman. After being harassed so often in transit, with no one saying a word to defend me, I needed to honour this wish that Black women be protected. I specifically painted myself with an afro as I was learning to be comfortable with my natural 4c hair. My famous hoops make an appearance, and this was my first time spray painting.
