The Black Student Lounge is a safe space for Black students, enabling a sense of belonging within the grander Toronto Metropolitan University community. The space fulfils a variety of needs including socialising, working, or existing authentically and peacefully. Through colourful and cyclical patterns, the mural takes into consideration the uniqueness of each student, beyond their Blackness. The wellbeing of individuals will contribute to success for Black students as a whole. I am hoping students feel reflected in this mural as I was inspired by the bold and truthful expressions of Blackness I’ve seen on campus.
The silhouettes walking towards the golden path are symbolic to feeling capable of going down your distinct path to prosperity, and this space supports that. The CN tower and skyline highlight Toronto as a city that fosters ambition, and its many colours inspire us to find the beauty in every day experienced during time studying at TMU.
I am so honoured and thankful to take part in creating this unifying space. This is a celebration of community and seeing ourselves in the triumphs of those around us.
